Volunteers and medics retrieved bodies off the coast of the flood-hit Libyan city of Derna, where a torrent washed away whole districts on Sunday (September 10) night after two dams collapsed under storm floods.

«We are waiting for the sea to calm down to be able to see the bodies that are visible to the eye,» said Libyan volunteer, who was helping medics in their search.

The devastating flooding, triggered by a Mediterranean storm landed in eastern Libya on Sunday, has caused extensive damages to infrastructure along its path. The situation in the city of Derna is particularly dire, with the number of casualties expected to rise further due to the dam failure.

The Libyan Red Crescent has reported over 11,000 deaths from recent floods in the eastern city of Derna. And it’s estimated that over 10,000 people remain missing.
